How to Master Self-Leadership & Self-Assessment

Mastering self-assessment will enable an individual to attain self-leadership skills. Self-assessment is the process of reflecting on strengths and weaknesses and finding a way to improve each skill set. Mastering self-leadership enables an individual to manage others while maintaining a constant awareness of his own leadership abilities. The two processes go hand-in-hand with one another. An individual who masters both self-assessment and self-leadership is a leader who elicits respect, admiration and advancement within an organization.

Instructions

    • 1

Draft a self-assessment form. List on the form the qualities of a leader and specific skills needed for your position. Examples of leadership qualities include communication skills, listening skills, empathy, compassion and understanding. Each self-assessment form will be specific to an individual and her career path.

    • 2

Read through the draft and make any changes necessary. Break generalized categories into more specific ones. Example: Communication skills subcategories include lines of communication, listening and speaking.

    • 3

Create a final draft to use for self-assessment. Continually revise the form through the self-assessment process as new skills are added.

    • 4

Rate your self-assessment abilities on a scale from 1 (no skills) to 5 (expert). Highlight the areas in need of improvement.

    • 5

Practice the areas needing improvement until all areas on the self-assessment are in the expert range.

    • 6

Find a mentor who you trust to help you with developing leadership skills. Speak with the mentor on a weekly basis to discuss situations that have arisen. Tell him how you handled the situation and ask if anything could have been done differently. Continue the process until all skills are mastered.
