Build your vocabulary by writing down new words on index cards. On one side, write down the word; on the other side, write down the word's meaning. You can test yourself or have a friend test you. The more often you test yourself on these words, the quicker you will learn them. In addition to learning the meaning, try to incorporate new words into sentences.

Become an active reader. The more you read, the more vocabulary you will be exposed to. While you read, keep a notepad nearby and write down any words you do not know. See if you can figure out a word's meaning by reading the entire sentence. If you cannot figure it out, look up the word in a dictionary and write down the definition in your notepad.
