Solar Power Colleges

According to the International Energy Agency, within the next 40 years solar power will provide nearly 25 percent of the world's electricity. Of that, 11 percent will come from solar panels on homes and businesses and another 11 percent from central solar power stations. For contractors and entrepreneurs who wish to take advantage, there are myriad schools and organizations that offer training that will prepare them for the emerging solar energy field.
  1. Solar Training Institute

    • The Solar Training Institute, with corporate offices in San Jose, California, offers courses and training for solar energy entrepreneurs, as well as contractors, electricians and engineers. Courses include photovoltaic (PV) system design, installation, OSHA safety and solar sales. Courses are structured to meet the requirements of launching a solar panel installation business. The Interstate Renewable Energy Council designated the school an ISPQ Accredited Training Program. The institute offers courses in San Jose, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego.

    Solar Energy International

    • Established in 1991 in Carbondale, Colorado, Solar Energy International is a non-profit educational organization. The school offers hands-on workshops and online courses in solar PV, wind, micro-hydro, solar hot water and natural home building. Students can receive college credit towards a Certificate in Renewable Energy through the Madison Area Technical College.

The electric solar training class is designed for students who want be PV installers or designers. It's also appropriate for homeowners. The thermal solar training course aids students in entering the solar hot water and radiant heating industry and to aid homeowners who want to design a system for their houses.

    Infinite Solar

    • Infinite Solar Inc. provides solar energy training in the United States and Canada. Its training and certificate programs provide professionals with the skills needed to expand their businesses and be successful in the solar energy market. Students will learn to design and install solar PV and solar thermal systems for residential, commercial, industrial and mobile applications. It offers a five-day entry-level solar PV design and installation course, a two-day hands-on workshop, a two-day PV advanced class and courses to prepare you for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) PV exam. Infinite Solar has facilities in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

    Allied Schools

    • Based in Laguna Hills, California, Allied Schools Inc., began in 1992. It offers online courses in green technologies, including its Introduction to PV Systems course designed to ready students for a career in the photovoltaic industry. It will help students develop basic knowledge of PV systems based on NABCEP objectives. It also has classes for the business of solar and an Advanced Principles of Photovoltaic Systems Installation course. Students who pass the Entry Level PV test will receive a Passing Score Achievement document.
