How to Learn CPR With the Red Cross

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, or CPR, is a life-saving technique used to keep a victim's heart beating during cardiac arrest. CPR utilizes a combination of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth breathing to keep a heart beating until a victim is stabilized or until further medical help arrives. The American Red Cross offers a variety of CPR classes designed to give you a well-rounded education in proper CPR administration.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Red Cross website and enter your zip code to find local classes. You may choose to take an adult CPR course, an infant CPR course or a combined class. Some CPR classes also offer first aid certification.

    • 2

Register for the class online or call your local Red Cross chapter to sign up. Payment is due at the time of registration.

    • 3

Attend the CPR class. Arrive a few minutes early to sign in and find your classroom.

    • 4

Pay attention throughout the class. Most CPR classes last between four and six hours, so try to stay awake and alert even if you become bored. Take notes or follow along in your book and highlight important concepts and ideas. Your instructor will use a variety of teaching methods including video clips, live demonstrations, lectures and guest speakers. Raise your hand and ask questions if you have them.

    • 5

Practice administering CPR on a classroom dummy. Your instructor will offer tips for proper technique and correct you if you make any mistakes.

    • 6

Take the end-of-class exam to ensure you learned all that you need to know about administering CPR. You will be tested on identifying the signs of someone who needs CPR, how to give CPR to an adult or infant, when to stop CPR and how to take safety precautions while performing CPR. If you pass the exam, you will receive your CPR certification card.
