How to Learn the Computer Keyboard With an Acronym Game

Whether as a parent or as a teacher, you can teach your children or students how to type on a computer keyboard by using games. While most people nowadays learn to use a computer keyboard at a young age, it is also possible to use such teaching methods with older students. The first goal when teaching how to use a computer keyboard is to get students to memorize the general layout of the keyboard. An engaging method to teach the keyboard layout is an acronym game, which you can easily set up and which requires only a minimum of preparation.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a piece of paper and make a list of 10 three-word phrases or sentences. Make sure that the vocabulary you use in those phrases or sentences is suitable for the age group of the students or children you are going to play this game with.

    • 2

Place the students or your children in front of a computer keyboard. Preferably, every student should have his own computer and keyboard. If it not possible, children can then take turns to play the game.

    • 3

Open Notepad or Wordpad on the students' computers. You can find both of these text editors in the "Accessories" folder of the Windows Start menu.

    • 4

Explain the rules of the game to the students. You will read a three-word phrase or sentence to them. Then, they will have to find out the acronym for that particular phrase or sentence. An acronym is a group of letters containing the first letter of every word in a phrase or sentence. For example, the acronym of "Eat your lunch" is "EYL." After that, they will have to type that acronym on their keyboard. The first student who types the correct acronym on her keyboard wins one point.

    • 5

Give your students or children a phrase or sentence as an example and check that they understand correctly the concept of an acronym.

    • 6

Read the first sentence or phrase. Wait for the first student to finish typing his acronym and check if it is correct. If it is correct, give that student one point.

    • 7

Read the rest of the sentences, one by one. Don't forget to always check on the student's monitor if he spelled the acronym correctly.
