How to Treat Wood Rot

Dry rot afflicts wood regardless of climate, soil type or geography. The fungus associated with dry rot also damages plaster and other building materials if left untreated. Timber that is comprised of more than 20 percent moisture is especially susceptible to dry rot. Because dry rot generally starts in unseen areas, the damage can spread significantly before it is noticed. Once it has been detected, quick measures are needed to protect surrounding wood.

Instructions

    • 1

Find and repair the source of moisture. This could be a leaking appliance, like a dishwasher or washing machine. The moisture gives the fungus the ability to flourish in the wood and other materials.

    • 2

Replace the damaged wood. The rotten wood is no longer capable of supporting the structure. In addition, this removes the majority of the fungus in that area.

    • 3

Apply fungicide to nearby wood that may be at risk for dry rot. This will kill the fungus and prevent it from spreading.
