How to Treat a Tight Scalp

Often, harsh shampoos will strip the natural oils and sebums from your scalp, affecting the pH balance of your scalp and making it a more hospitable environment to the yeasts that cause dandruff and flaking. As well, when moving in and out of heated areas, you are likely to develop a flaky, itchy, tight-feeling scalp. Fortunately, you have many potential remedies open to you, including changing your shampoo, using natural treatments, and scalp massage.

Switch your shampoo to one that is free of parabens and, ideally, contains oils akin to the sebums that naturally moisturize our skin. These oils include jojoba, macadamia or wheatgerm.

    • 2

Treat your scalp with a tea made of fresh lavender, oatmeal, and tea tree oil. Steep 1/4 cup lavender and 1/4 cup oatmeal in 2 cups of hot water, for five minutes. Strain, then add 2 tbsp. of tea tree oil to the mix. The lavender and oatmeal will soothe your tight scalp, while the tea tree oil will reduce flaking and irritation.

Massage your scalp with pure lavender oil. The oil will help treat your dandruff, while reducing any hair dryness caused by shampoos.
