Write the first seven letters of the alphabet on the board while saying the letter name. Have students copy letters into their notebooks and help them write a pronunciation equivalent in their native language next to the letter, so they can remember how to say it. For example, a Spanish speaker may write "Aey" for the letter "A." Continue to review the letter names, and teach each letter's sound for the remainder of the lesson. Do the same with the next seven letters in the next lesson until the alphabet has been learned. Continue to review previously learned letters in each lesson.
Once all the letters have been learned over many lessons, write the entire alphabet on the board. When students can say the entire alphabet while looking at the letters, take away letters with the eraser, and challenge students to fill in the blanks. Continue reciting the alphabet as a class each time you take a few letters away, and don't stop until the entire alphabet is gone. Then start over with the entire alphabet on the board, but this time review the sound each letter makes.
For this lesson you will need a set of alphabet flashcards for yourself and one for each student. Instead of buying flashcard sets, you can easily make them out of index cards or even scratch paper. To test a student's recognition of letters by sight, hold up flashcards one at a time, and give each student a turn to say the name of a letter. The greater challenge will be for students to recognize letters by sound. To test this, say the name of a letter. Students must find the corresponding letter in their sets and hold it up to the class.
Give each student a piece of chalk, and have them find a place at the chalkboard. Show them how to write "A," taking your time with each of the three lines needed to make the letter. Then encourage students to write the same letter on the board. Continue through the alphabet, but stop for a review every five or six letters. Test your students by calling out numbers you have already covered at random. Be patient; it will take many lessons for students to master writing the letters of the alphabet.
