What were the calpulli?

Calpulli (plural: calpultin) was the name given by the Aztecs to the districts or neighborhoods into which the city of Tenochtitlan was divided.

Each calpulli had its own patron deity, temple, school, and land for farming. This system of organization allowed for the efficient management of Tenochtitlan as well as the preservation of traditional customs.
