Silver Wings Activities

Silver Wings is a co-ed student organization with chapters at many colleges and universities throughout the country. The organization, which is entirely student-run, is devoted to community service and developing civilian leadership skills. Chapter members improve professional skills through different organization activities and workshops, while also giving back to the community through volunteer work and community aid.
  1. Fundraising

    • Fundraising activities are common for Silver Wings chapters. Some fundraising activities are intended to raise money for the costs of maintaining a chapter on campus or the costs of travel to national events and programs. However, Silver Wings chapters also host fundraising activities to raise money for local charities and causes, particular those with veteran or military interests. Fundraising activities include events such as chili cook-offs, talent shows, pancake dinners, car washes, dance-a-thons and bowl-a-thons.

    Volunteering

    • Silver Wings activities include different volunteer events and activities to help members fulfill duties of service to the community. Silver Wings members babysit for local families, tutor youth students, visit nursing homes and provide ushering for community and charity events. Other volunteer activities typical for Silver Wings members include working at local humane societies, working at blood drives, operating blood donor screening hotlines and cleaning litter from local parks and public areas.

    Socializing

    • Silver Wings activities include diverse social activities, such as dances, bowling and musical concerts. On-campus social activities are organized to recruit members and to promote interaction between Silver Wings and other college community service groups. Social activities also help to build morale among chapter members, as members network with each other and share similar goals and values.

    Professional Development

    • Local chapter, regional and national Silver Wings groups host workshops focused on professional education to help members develop leadership and business skills. For instance, chapters host local business representatives to present on internships and other opportunities for professional development. Chapters also invite career center representatives to host a worship on writing resumes, public speaking, time management and other job skills. These kinds of activities help members to acquire the skills necessary to succeed beyond the classroom.

    Civic Duties

    • To fulfill its objective of civic awareness, Silver Wings organizes and hosts activities to educate the community and members about national defense issues and good citizenry. For instance, Silver Wings chapters organize projects to increase public awareness of America's prisoners of war and soldiers missing in action. Chapters also host candlelight vigils for local service members who die in combat and raise money for monuments devoted to prisoners of war or missing-in-action soldiers from the local community. During election season, Silver Wings also conducts voter registration drives.
