Student Activities on Consumer Rights

It's the responsibility of a school's student activities department to heighten awareness of student consumer rights. Awareness may be achieved through various forms, such as student handouts or events, that make students aware of financial situations regarding tuition, fees, financial aid and, to an extent, responsible financial advice (like avoiding identity theft and amassing credit card balances while in school). Creating a link on the campus website that addresses the consumer rights of students works, too. Any clubs or organizations associated with the college must comply with student consumer rights.
  1. Constitution Day

    • A student government association may obtain funding from the student activities department to sponsor an awareness event regarding student consumer rights. This event could include free food, which is one way to get students to stop and visit the various information booths. Open the event to other student clubs and organizations, asking each to have an information booth about a specific aspect of student consumer rights. This is also a recruiting opportunity for clubs and organizations.

    Student Handouts

    • College orientation days provide opportunities to distribute student consumer information. The National Association of Consumer Advocate has a website that addresses the specific rights of students. Your campus admissions or legal department should have information addressing these issues as well. If your campus has a legal club, such as the international fraternity Phi Delta Phi, ask it to assemble and distribute literature.

    On the Web

    • The University of Michigan addresses student rights on its website directly related to student consumer rights regarding financial aid. If your school doesn't have one, ask to have a section devoted to students consumer rights created. Once done, or if it exists, advertise the site with posters stating "Do You Know Your Rights?" Have faculty and staff wear buttons advertising this site. Obtain funding for the posters and buttons from the student activities office. For information on how to request funds, contact the student activities department.

    Reach Out

    • One sensitive area regarding student consumer rights is that colleges mandate a student service fee that's attached to enrollment. Reach out and educate the students on campus about where the money goes and how to request it. Designate an event at the beginning of each term that advertises the various clubs and organizations on campus as well as giving out the information about starting a club or organization. List all events that are campus-sponsored and funded with the student activities monies. Create and give away a free campus datebook or planner with all activities, resources and consumer rights printed on the calendar.
