Rights of Nursing Students

The NSNA (National Student Nurses' Association) was established in 1952 for the purpose of fostering and licensing registered nurses. It is a nonprofit organization which provides grants and scholarships to undergraduate nursing students and in which they have a voice. In 1975, a bill of rights was adopted by delegates representing student nurses across the country. It is periodically revised to reflect current interests and concerns.
  1. Voice

    • Student nurses have the right to representation on a student-faculty council and faculty committees, where they participate in the formulating of policies and procedures affecting them. They are entitled to provide input on development of curriculum and challenge existing views relating to the institution's course of study. They may invite speakers they would like to hear as long as the philosophy and objectives of the institution are honored. There must be a mechanism provided for the purpose of allowing student evaluation of the school.

    To Teach and Learn

    • Student nurses must know they can depend on teaching institutions to provide an atmosphere of learning, which includes policies protecting the freedom to learn. In their educational endeavors, students should be encouraged to make a personal journey toward independent thought and exchange of ideas and opinions. The most current and credible scientific and health information should be a part of all course content. As the nursing student moves through the education process, he assumes the right and responsibility to share knowledge with others.

    Individual Rights

    • No student should expect to be a target of discrimination based on race, creed, ethnicity, age, gender, life style, disability or economic status. There is a guarantee against academic evaluation based on predisposed or misrepresented notions. It is expected that confidentiality is the norm surrounding strictly personal matters like sexual orientation and political views. The nursing school is responsible for using discretion and consideration when determining the contents of permanent academic records. Students have the right to access their personal records. The institution is responsible for maintaining a safe environment in which to learn and a certain amount of privacy in living space.

    Right to Unite

    • Student nurses have the same freedoms granted to all members of the school community. They have the right to join, or refuse to join, organizations representing and serving their interests. Within such groups, they may freely express and discuss opinions, privately and publicly, without fear of retribution. Grievance procedures shall be in place to address student issues and shall be communicated to all in clear and concise form. Both faculty and students should be represented during the evolution of such procedures.
