School Leadership Day Activities

The term "Leadership Day" can refer to any event that educates attendees in leadership principles or provides opportunities to take on the role of leader. Many educational institutions hold an annual Leadership Day to promote student development of necessary skills for success in the workforce and active civic engagement. To host a Leadership Day for your high school, college, or university, plan a series of interactive activities that will be meaningful for students in attendance.
  1. Local Leaders Meet and Greet

    • Arrange a brunch or happy hour where students can meet local leaders. Invite several local professionals who hold leadership positions in schools, businesses, nonprofit organizations and government. Ask one or two of these people to deliver a brief address with his/her views on leadership to attendees. Following the speech, encourage student attendees and local leaders to communicate with each other. Consider pairing each student with a local leader as a mentor. Keep the majority of the event informal so that students will feel comfortable asking questions and receiving mentoring.

    Civic Engagement Fair

    • Hold a Civic Engagement Fair on campus to inform students about opportunities for involvement. Contact students who are involved with a neighborhood association, the public school system, a charity, activism or some other form of volunteer work. Ask them to prepare a display on their organization, emphasizing ways in which its members provide leadership within the local community. Students interested in becoming more engaged with the community can attend the fair, ask questions and sign up to receive further information on various organizations.

    Leadership Film Screening

    • Hold an outdoor screening of a film with leadership themes. You can choose a film that tells the story of a specific leader or a group whose initiative had a life-altering impact up others. After the screening, have attendees divide into small groups for discussion. Provide a handout with possible discussion questions such as "What leadership qualities are present in the film's characters?" and "How did the film's protagonist meet challenges and achieve goals?"

    Leadership Awards Banquet

    • Host an awards banquet for outstanding student leaders and their families. To prepare, advertise a call for leadership award nominations. Awards can be for "Outstanding Student Leader," "Excellence in Community Involvement" and other relevant categories. You can also create fun awards to be voted on by those who attend the ceremony, such as "Most Humorous Student Leader" or "Best Dressed Student Leader." Hold the awards banquet as a wrap-up to Leadership Day.
