Programmatic area activities include those aimed at furthering the mission of Spelman College. Activities under this guise include student government, Greek fraternities and sororities, student media outlets and Miss Spelman and Court. These organizations further the mission of Spelman by providing co-curricular programs, leadership development opportunities and exposure to diversity.
Spelman's Student Affairs Global Experience or S.A.G.E. works to engage students actively in other cultures. In the past, the organization has hosted trips of 80 to Japan, Egypt, Rome, Paris, London and Senegal, West Africa. The organization gauges it success by pre- and post-trip surveys measuring student knowledge. In addition, many other organizations sponsor domestic and international cultural events.
Spelman is home to six sororities. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho have rich histories of scholarship, community service, sisterhood and distinction. Gamma Sigma Sigma is a sorority founded upon the principles of diversity and service, while Sigma Alpha Iota is an international organization for women that fosters and promotes a shared love of music.
Spelman College, operating within the Great South Athletic Conference, is home to women's teams in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. They also have a cheerleading squad. Jaguar athletic teams have won numerous awards over the years.
Spelman College has over 70 student organizations, including its six sororities and the professional, international, religious, academic honorary and special interest clubs and organizations on campus. A few such organizations include a Spelman chapter of the NAACP, the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization, Public Safety POSSE, a group working to keep the Spelman campus safe and the AUC Japan Club, for those interested in Japanese culture. Each year, the college hosts a Student Organization Fair to acquaint students with campus groups.
