Musical activities are available through Tisch, a part of NYU that stresses music education. For example, the N'Harmonics Club is an a cappella club that focusses on rock groups. Students from throughout the school belong and spread music by performing rock with semi-semester contests at NYU as well as at other campuses. In addition, FONM, Full Out, No Marketing, is a student cabaret club that attracts both undergraduate and graduate students. It produces two cabarets per semester showing off NYU talent. It is aimed at helping new composers become exposed to the New York theatre scene. Also, Tisch offers a magazine for photographers to have their work published. They arrange for exhibits for photographers as well. In addition, a Gospel Club spreads information about gospel music throughout the university. It is a multi-cultural club that gives musical performances featuring gospel music.
The Fine Arts Society attracts students interested in art history. It is open to all students and offers visitations to museums and galleries. They also arrange lectures on art history, show films and publish a newsletter emphasizing programs at NYU's Grey Art Gallery. A 2011 program included, for example, an art exhibit commemorating the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in 1911.
Academic Clubs exist within various areas of study. For example, the General Psychology Association runs programs for graduate students. In addition to discussions on the subject, they mention the latest opporunity for jobs, research and doctoral programs. Another organization is the Courant Institute of Mathematics, which provides a venue for social events and exchanges of ideas among students interested in math. They meet regularly and have themed events and a game night. An annual event is the Pi Day Party every March 14. Also, a Model United Nations Club discusses issues that are based on international relations. It provides a background in the structure of the U.N. and of current issues facing this organization.
NYU offers the Coles Sports Center and the Palladium Athletic Facility that members can use. There also is a Violet Booster Club that invites the NYU community to the athletic programs. They conduct receptions and special events throughout the year and encourage members to attend home athletic events. NYU also offers extracurricular sports in the same fields as do other colleges. Students receive honors throughout the years in many of the sports available.
Many ethnic groups have clubs on campus. For example, an African Students Union provides a forum for students of African descent as well as those interested in Africa. It is a political group that works to eliminate the Aids epidemic as well as debt relief. The Jewish Voice is a public forum for Jewish culture. It gives the NYU student an opportunity to express ideas and learn about Jewish culture.
Other extracurricular activities include a student government group that meets weekly and consists of leaders from various organizations. This is open to undergraduates as well as to graduate students. Also, The Teachers Without Borders Chapter at NYU is part of a world organization that emphasizes teacher development. Each year the group designs a project on how to teach in underprivileged areas. Another example is the American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by students. It works with the International Red Cross to help victims of disasters and emergencies.
