Extracurricular Activities for Pharmacy Students

Pharmacy school is challenging and time-consuming, but students still must find time to participate in extracurricular activities. Such activities enhance a resume, broaden job prospects and help gain valuable networking contacts. Investigate your pharmacy school's extracurricular offerings and take part in as many as your schedule allows.
  1. Professional Development

    • Pharmacy school can teach you a lot, but hands-on experience can be even more valuable. Apply for an internship at a local pharmacy or pharmaceutical company. Apply for pharmacy related part-time jobs -- such as pharmacy clerk -- if you cannot find an internship. Contact school alumni and ask to shadow them for a day. Work with your professors to conduct research or serve as an aide to the department head. Join professional associations as soon as you are eligible and take advantage of the meetings and events.

    Personal Development

    • Join campus clubs related to your studies, but also choose a few that are simply for fun and pleasure. Don't be afraid to start a club. It shows a willingness to lead and be proactive. Hone your conversational skills and boost your confidence by joining the debate or speech team. Stay in shape by joining an intramural team or taking fitness classes at the gym. Research your area to find the most common language besides English. Take lessons in it so that you will be prepared to converse with more clients when you graduate.

    Service

    • Volunteering shows character and a sense of community. Volunteer to teach Sunday School if you attend church. Sign up with Big Brothers and Big Sisters to mentor an at-risk youth. Spend Saturday mornings helping a local Goodwill store sort and stock donations. Visit shut-ins or read to nursing home residents.

    Other Activities

    • Future employers want to see that you are a well-rounded individual, so take part in purely recreational activities as well. If you love video games, play them. If horseback riding is your thing, then go riding. Read as much as possible. It will make you a better conversation partner. Watch the news to stay up to date on current events. Return to your college alma mater during Homecoming and take an active part in its alumni club.
