Ask your children what they would like to do as an extracurricular activity. Let them know that it may not be possible to pursue all of their suggestions, but you are looking for ideas involving knowledge that will build upon their interests, self-esteem and natural talents.
Call interesting civic organizations and ask if they give tours to smaller groups of children as well as the public school classes. Asking this way will help you to establish the fact that your children should be able to visit the facility regardless of the class size.
Contact the fire station, hospital, museum, library or any other city entity to see what they have to offer.
Make the most of an extracurricular activity by combining a trip to the zoo with a fun afternoon consisting of a picnic and playing on the playground equipment at a nearby park.
Sign your homeschool student up for soccer or baseball. All children benefit from being active in sports. The YMCA offers many of these programs.
Find out about other options. Many local community education organizations offer classes in home economics, dance, music, art, ceramics and drama for various age groups. If your students are interested, this is a good option.
Investigate where your state stands on homeschool extracurricular activities. Most (but not all) schools have taken an official stand that it is unfair to keep homeschooled children from participating in the school district's extracurricular offerings.
Look into the future. Auto mechanics, outside work and volunteering will all count as extracurricular activities when you sign up for colleges, so keep an eye out for great opportunities. Other ideas include community service and volunteering at nursing homes, hospitals or public libraries.
See if there is a homeschool networking portal in your area. If not, start one. This is a great way for different homeschool classes or families to get together and plan out activities. Younger children, particularly, will benefit from the adults starting the activities. As they get older, they will have their own suggestions for extracurricular activities.
