Quick Meals for College Students

The average college student could probably get by on macaroni and cheese, instant noodles and leftover pizza for a whole semester, but there are better, tastier alternatives that can be prepared with just a microwave, electric kettle and stove top. Some meals are not only healthier choices but can also help maintain alertness throughout the long study sessions, tests and papers.
  1. Omelettes

    • Omelettes are a great way to start off the day. They provide much more nutrition than cereal. The quickest way to make omelettes is to buy eggs pre-scrambled in a carton, which usually makes them much more fluffier. However, it is healthier to simply buy normal eggs and add a little bit of water as they are cooking to get the same fluffy effect. When scrambling eggs in the frying pan, wait until the broken eggs develop a cooked base before flipping them over. Tilt the pan every now and then to ensure that this will happen.

    Quinoa

    • Quinoa is a whole grain, closely related to leafy vegetables like spinach. Quinoa only takes 15 minutes to make and is extremely healthy. Boil cold water, and let the quinoa simmer for 10 minutes. Then let it stand for 5 minutes, until fluffy. Quinoa is available in health food stores and in most grocery stores. If Quinoa is hard to find, try couscous, which can be made in the microwave, and is very similar to quinoa in taste. Both options are also great with brown sugar and mixed vegetables and are extremely filling.

    Grilled Cheese

    • When money is an issue, stick to the essentials like bread and cheese. A tasty sandwich to make with these ingredients is grilled cheese. Take two pieces of bread, butter both sides, and place them on a frying pan. Add cheese, and cover the pan until the cheese melts. Try adding canned tuna to turn the sandwich into a healthy tuna melt.

    Burrito

    • Burritos are a perfect college meal. Not only are they easy to make, but they can be wrapped nicely in tin foil and brought to class or eaten on the run. Purchase a can of refried beans, cook it, and add shredded cheese, salsa, lettuce and hot sauce or sour cream to a tortilla shell. It is completely optional to add rice or ground beef, because the main ingredient that makes burritos taste good is usually the hot sauce or sour cream.

    Chili

    • What is great about chili is that it can be stored in the fridge and re-heated as leftovers for weeks. It is also a good way to feed lots of people in a dormitory and tastes just as good vegetarian style as it does with ground beef. Boil water, and add desired ingredients. Reduce heat, and simmer for 20 minutes, while stirring occasionally. Just so long as the right mixture of garlic and spices such as cumin and chili powder are added, chili is a great bet for college students.

    Breaded Chicken Breast

    • Chicken breasts are an obvious choice for any dinner and should take 30 minutes to prepare. The fastest method is to cover the chicken breast with flour, egg and pre-packaged breadcrumbs or breadcrumbs that come with Parmesan or Provolone cheese mixed in. Then bake at 350 degrees, until ready.
