Healthy Living Tips for College Students

College life can get busy with trying to balance classes, studying, work, chores and social activities. It might seem impossible to take time out to worry about your health, but even a small time investment in taking care of yourself will pay off. The better you feel, the better you will be at tackling all of your obligations.
  1. Keep a Healthy Snack Stash

    • Keeping healthy snacks on hand that travel well will ensure you have a constant supply of energy. Bags of nuts, seeds, trail mix, dried fruit, granola, raw vegetables, pieces of fruit and hard boiled eggs can be packaged so that you can nibble between classes or on your way from one place to another without slowing you down.

    Make Time for Exercise

    • Some kind of physical activity will help keep your energy up and your weight down. Exercise can help relieve stress, alleviate anxiety, lower symptoms of depression and improve your confidence, according to the Mayo Clinic. Get exercise in any way you find fun and convenient. Wake up 30 minutes early to go jogging or do yoga, hit the gym during free periods or turn on the music and take dancing breaks when studying in the evening. Doing what works best for you and what you enjoy will motivate you to keep it up.

    Don't Sacrifice Sleep

    • When it seems there aren't enough waking hours to get done everything you need to do, it seems only logical to sacrifice a couple of hours sleep. According to Dr. William C. Dement, expert in sleep science, this creates "sleep debt." Sleep debt is the effect on your body for cumulative hours of missed sleep. Too large of a sleep debt building up over time can ultimately result in mental or emotional fatigue. It becomes a vicious cycle, because fatigue can make your everyday chores more difficult and take longer, resulting in more missed sleep. Get seven to eight hours of sleep per night so when you are doing things you can function at optimal levels. If necessary, catch up on lost sleep with naps.

    Keep Your Doctor's Appointments

    • Go to your health care provider to nip any problems in the bud before they become so bad that they interfere with your life and education. Keep up with routine check-ups, eye exams and dental appointments. Keep up with vaccinations for things such as influenza, tetanus and HPV to protect yourself. If you don't have a health care provider or insurance, find out if there is a campus clinic or health center with a sliding scale fee you can go to.
