People may have different tastes and varying associations of home, but virtually everyone will get homesick at one point or another. One way to combat these temporary blues is to have a few items on hand that are comforting in that they remind you of home (see Reference 1). These could be anything, depending on where you are from, such as hot sauce from your favorite eatery, music from bands in your hometown or even some non-perishable candy that a friend or relative made (see Reference 1).
Many schools have a rule that requires incoming freshman to live on campus and forbids them from bringing their cars. Even if this is not the case at your institution, there are numerous benefits to bringing along your bike to school (see Reference 2). Not only is it cheap transportation, but you also won't have to deal with the semi-chaotic parking situations present at many commuter colleges. Plus, it's a great way to get exercise and meet people.
Most colleges will have a gymnasium of some sort, but you still stand to benefit from bringing along your own equipment that you can take with you anywhere. The more portable, the better, as this is a good way to take advantage of beautiful weather and also to meet people. For example, a Frisbee, a baseball and glove or a football are all great things to do on the university center lawn or at a local park (see Reference 2).
The temptation at first may be to simply transplant your high school room decor to your new dorm. While this is good in that it adequately expresses your personality and reminds you of home, why not take the opportunity to get the most out of the new scenery and branch out a bit (see Reference 1)? For instance, purchase art or posters that you would never have previously thought of buying, as there are no rules except that it has to make you happy.
