Things to Pack When Leaving for College

Leaving for college is a trying time in a lot of households. Parents are worried about their children moving away, new college students are excited and nervous about their new environment. Reduce some of that stress by planning what your child should take with him to college and then pack according to your list.
  1. Entertainment

    • Don't underestimate your child's need for study breaks. Instead of assuming they'll spend all their time at the library or hitting the books in their room, support and encourage break time. It can make them study more efficiently overall. An MP3 player and video rental service subscription will eliminate the need for a television and cable if your student brings a laptop computer with him. A computer should be a priority for work and for entertainment. Have your student bring a pair of ear plugs, too. That way he can block out his roommate's entertainment if necessary.

    Room Supplies

    • This list can be long and you'll want to contact any future roommates and try to coordinate bigger items, like a small refrigerator or microwave. But, your student will need to bring power cords and at least one power strip. An air freshener is always helpful. Two sets of sheets will ensure your daughter isn't stuck sleeping on her mattress due to unforseen circumstances. A basic tool kit and a roll of duct tape can be a life safer in a lot of dorm room situations. Door hangers will help keep some clothing and towels off the floor and storage containers that fit under the bed can hold anything extra, like old text books. The room will need a small trash can and garbage bags. Don't forget to bring a desk lamp and an alarm clock.

    Toiletries and Clothing

    • Dorm room showers are communal, a pair of flip flops and towels are a must-have. Shaving and washing toiletries will be necessary, too. A caddy for the shower will help keep it together. Aspirin and cough drops are an extra touch that will come in handy. Have your student bring a bathrobe and only seasonal clothing. Dorm room closet space is limited. Clothing for inclement weather is a must. That means rain boots, umbrella and warm weather boots for most parts of the country.

    Other Considerations

    • There are many other items that will be useful at college, such as laundry detergent and a laundry bag, one with handles is ideal. Some sort of bag or backpack to carry books and writing supplies in is a given. A full range of office supplies, such as paper, pens, pencils, folders, notebooks, a graphing calculator and a USB flash drive will come in handy. Flash drives allow your student to easily transfer papers and presentations electronically between classes, dorm rooms and the library.
