Things to Do at College to Kill Time

For most college students, life is filled with classes, homework and deadlines. There are, however, a variety of things that most college students can do to stay busy during those rare periods of down time. Some alternatives to watching TV or surfing the Internet allow college students to make extra money, make new friends and help make a difference in their community.
  1. Join a Club

    • Most colleges offer clubs, fraternities and sororities. Joining a club is an excellent way to enrich your college life and make new friends. Most sororities accept enrollment at the beginning of each academic year, although others accept new members on a case-by-case basis. In addition to regular social functions, many clubs and sororities perform services that help to contribute to and improve the college or university they serve and membership to such clubs can look impressive on a future resume.

    Volunteering

    • No matter where you go to school, most communities offer abundant opportunities for volunteer work. From donating your time to an animal shelter to spending time with kids in community-sponsored after-school programs, volunteering looks great on a resume and is an excellent way to help give back to your community. In addition, volunteering your time in a field that is relevant to your major of study may allow you to earn academic credits toward your degree.

    Work Part-Time

    • College students are often strapped for cash. Working part-time is an excellent means of gaining valuable work experience in addition to making extra spending money. Working part-time in a field that is relevant to your course of study may also allow you to earn credit toward your degree, depending on the policies of your college or university. Additional benefits of working part-time in your chosen field is that doing so allows you to make valuable connections in your field and many employers offer tuition assistance, which can help to offset the cost of paying for college.

    Athletics

    • There is no better way to fight off the dreaded "freshman 15" than to work out. Joining a gym is an excellent way to get an effective work out on a regular basis and meet new friends as you get fit. Some colleges have work out facilities on-site and most gym memberships allow you to pay as you go. If working out in a gym isn't your preference, consider joining an athletic team, such as a community or school based soft ball team. Golf and basketball are other sports that get you off the couch and into the community.
