How to Keep Awake While Reading

Whether you are studying for an exam or leisurely reading a book, the last thing you want to do is fall asleep. When you get sleepy, it becomes hard to focus and retain the information you are reading. This becomes even more difficult when reading late at night. You can take a number of steps to avoid falling asleep while reading.

Instructions

    • 1

Stay hydrated while reading by drinking plenty of water. Dehydration can cause you to feel tired, making it harder to stay awake. Occasionally taking a drink of water will also keep you occupied while reading and help keep you awake.

    • 2

Take breaks when reading for long periods of time. For instance, if you're reading for two hours, take a 15-minute break every 45 minutes. Take a walk, listen to music, watch TV or do something other than read during this break. This will help keep you fresh and attentive when reading.

    • 3

Read in an area that is well-lighted and not overly comfortable. Reading in bed or on a comfortable couch can lead you to fall asleep more easily. Also, sit up rather than lie down while reading.

    • 4

Change your position every once in a while or walk around the room occasionally. This will keep your blood flowing and make you more alert when reading.

    • 5

Snack occasionally to keep your blood sugar up and help you stay awake while reading.
