How to Improve Reading Accuracy

Improving your reading accuracy not only makes reading more enjoyable, but it increases your self-esteem. Reading aloud and understanding what you're reading makes it more likely you will continue to read and pass that tradition on to your own children. Reading can provide you with a variety of educational opportunities, so the better your accuracy, the more knowledge you can devour.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice reading every day. Set aside 15 to 30 minutes to read a book, newspaper or magazine on a daily basis. You will improve your accuracy if you study and practice reading on a consistent basis.

    • 2

Create a list of words that are troublesome for you when reading. Study these words individually to improve your accuracy while reading a sentence or paragraph.

    • 3

Enlist the help of a tutor or friend to test and time you while reading for accuracy. A friend can provide you with a paragraph to read and follow along, marking off incorrect words and mispronunciations as you go. You can review the mistakes with her and gain insight into areas of reading you need to work on in order to be more accurate.

Purchase an online computer program or visit an online website designed to help you improve your vocabulary, fluency and accuracy skills. Practice reading while using the program at least once per week for about an hour.

Stay positive and focused while you practice your reading. Try not to get discouraged. Reading is a challenging skill and it will take time for you to improve your accuracy. Celebrate small achievements or set manageable goals to keep you motivated.
