How to Indent on an Annonated Bilbiography in APA Format

Bibliographies are used in research essays to cite sources. Bibliographies are ordered alphabetically and allow the reader to see from what source specific research came, protecting the writer from plagiarism suspicions. While many people are aware that the American Psychological Association has rules on citing sources, there are also rules on how to format a research essay. An annotated bibliography not only lists the source but provides a brief summary and evaluation of the source as well. Annotated bibliographies are not required for all papers but they can help clarify the background behind a particular source.

Instructions

    • 1

Create the annotated bibliography first. Once you've listed all of your sources, indenting the page is an easy step.

    • 2

Format the annotated bibliography page. It should be on its own page with the title of "References". Remember to list entries alphabetically and to use double spacing, not single spacing.

    • 3

Use a hanging indent for annotated bibliographies. The first line should be flush with the paper's left margin. All other lines on the paper should be indented six spaces from the margin. Some professors allow you to use the tab key to create an indentation in your paper. If this is the case, tab over once then add two spaces for the bibliography.
