College students sometimes take courses at a hometown college or university during breaks from their regular classes. High school students often take Advanced Placement Courses. Instructions

    • 1

Choose a course similar to one in your own college's catalog or take a general survey course. The closer your course comes to one available in your own school, the more likely it will be to transfer.

    • 2

Ask the registrar's office what procedure they follow for accepting outside course credit. Most schools require a completed transfer credit application, an official transcript, course description and contact information for you and for the registrar at your outside institution.

    • 3

Contact the institution where you took your course. Send them a copy of the transfer credit application and ask them to send a transcript of your grade. Most colleges charge a fee to send a transcript.

    • 4

Submit the application to your registrar. Include as much information as possible on the course you took. Ask the professor to send a course syllabus and include a letter to your institution outlining the course curriculum in detail.

    • 5

Provide any additional information or supplementary documentation. You will want the registrar to be as informed as possible. Your institution may not accept your credit, but give them everything possible to make an informed decision.
