How to Get College Credit for Police Training

Police receive specific training to obtain the position of a law enforcement officer, often through police academies or similar training facilities. While the police training will allow a candidate to join the police force, some higher positions within the force require further education such as a bachelor's or associate's degree, depending on the position and the responsibilities of the position. Some colleges offer credit for police training programs that help officers get their education while receiving training for their job as well.

The administrative office will have information about the specific programs and credit the school offers to police or police in training.

Credits in most colleges that offer credit for police training is either 15 or 16 credits. Credit types will vary depending on the school. Some schools will only give credit for elective classes while others will allow some credits for general education.

Look at the specific police training program. Some programs, such as Pennsylvania's Act 120 or Miami Police College, will offer college credits through the program for officers that opt for the credit. Other programs will not have credits already available and are dependent on the college instead. If the program offers college credits as well as police training certification, the number of credits and type of credits awarded is through the program and made available to police in training beforehand.
