Top Law Schools in Ohio

Altogether, there are nine law schools in Ohio. The top three are all considered to be tier-one schools, which have the highest national reputation. These schools are The Ohio State University, the University of Cincinnati and Case Western Reserve University. Each school provides students with varied opportunities in legal education, and employment prospects are typically higher when compared to the other law schools in Ohio.

    • Ranked as the 35th best law school in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for 2010, The Ohio State University is the premier legal institution in Ohio. As a public school, students from Ohio are given preference in admission as well as discounted tuition. Of the 2,375 applicants in 2009, approximately 32 percent were offered admission. The median LSAT score for accepted students was 162, and the median GPA was 3.60. Graduates of the school primarily sit for the bar exam in Ohio, with some students electing to take the Illinois bar exam. Overall, students produced a bar-passage rate of 91.33 percent, which is 4.5 percent higher than the Ohio state average.

    University of Cincinnati

    • The University of Cincinnati College of Law was ranked 52nd by U.S. News & World Report in 2010. The school prides itself on providing an intimate learning environment within a small urban city, and the results of such an approach are evident in the high employment rates enjoyed by Cincinnati law graduates. Approximately 38 percent of nearly 1,200 applicants were offered admission in 2009, with admitted students possessing a median LSAT score of 160 and a median GPA of 3.64. Graduates of the school also performed well on the Ohio state bar exam, posting a success rate of 86.73 percent.

    Case Western Reserve University

    • Ranked 55th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2010, Case Western Reserve is regarded as the top law school in Cleveland and northern Ohio. As part of its extensive legal curriculum, Case Western Reserve offers students a specialized opportunity to study international, technology and medical law among other disciplines. Approximately 38 percent of the 2,112 applicants in 2009 were offered admission, with a median LSAT score of 159 and median GPA of 3.51 for the full-time program. Part-time students took advantage of slightly relaxed admission standards with a median LSAT score of 152 and median GPA of 3.47. Unlike other top law schools in Ohio, Case Western Reserve graduates traveled to a number of jurisdictions across the United States, with the most popular including New York, California and Illinois. Overall, graduates struggled on bar exams, especially in California, with an overall national bar-passage rate of 76.48 percent.
