Political Science Thesis Ideas

Political science is a broad field, so it's important to narrow down a thesis topic to something you can gather enough research on and that you're interested in. Also start your research early, so you'll be able to make changes if you have to expand or change your topic. It's also beneficial to discuss your idea with your advisor to be sure she approves of it.
  1. Politics and Hollywood

    • In recent years we've seen an increase in celebrities endorsing politicians. You could write a thesis on whether celebrity endorsements change the opinions of voters toward political candidates, and how this affects ethics issues regarding the money that celebrities give to political campaigns. Or you could research politically conservative celebrities and how they deal with the conflict between themselves and liberal celebrities and producers.

    Politicians and Parenthood

    • Discuss the challenges that politicians face in balancing their work lives with parenthood. For example, you can examine how past U.S. presidents balanced their public duties with parenthood. Also mention how the children of those presidents viewed their fathers' careers, and how this influenced their own career choices as they got older. You should also discuss the conflict that arose between the presidents and their children.

    U.S.-Mexico Relations

    • In light of the immigration debate and drug violence that's occurring in Mexico, it would be a good idea to do a thesis paper on the state of U.S. and Mexican relations politically. You could discuss the turbulent history between the two countries that dates back to the 1800s, and examine whether those historical tensions have created animosity toward U.S. immigration policies by the Mexican-American community.
