4th Grade Science Invention Ideas

When kids enter the fourth grade, they begin to study a science curriculum in depth and learn about inventions and inventors. This is a good time to encourage them to come up with their own science inventions or participate in projects in class. There are many activities that students will find interesting.
  1. The Egg Drop

    • Divide students into groups and direct them to come up with an invention to prevent an egg from breaking after it drops from a certain height, such as a roof. Students may create a way to cradle the egg during the drop, such as using a hammock. They may use a protective carton to cover the egg during the fall. Or they may create a sort of safety net or cushioned mat to avoid the impact after the egg drops. After inventing their egg protector, students can have a contest to see whose idea actually works in shielding the egg from any damage during the fall.

    Create Their Own Invention

    • Once the kids have studied inventors and different types of machines, they can create their own. Ask students to invent something that will make their lives easier, such as a machine to do their homework for them. Have them work as group, designing the device by drawing it on a sheet of paper and then outlining how it will work. Students can even go as far as making a model of this idea.

    Create a New Flower

    • Using basic white flowers such as carnations, have student create a different flower of their own. Provide bright food coloring and a clear jar that is either glass or plastic. Students can fill the jar with water, then add in the food coloring. Have them mix colors to come up with a new color. Students can cut a bit of the stem from the flower and place the flower in the jar of water and food color as it would be placed in vase. The flower needs to remain in the jar for 24 hours to transform from white to the new color the students created.

    Fun With Morse Code

    • In an age where kids text as much as they talk, teach them about other inventions that have been used for communication besides the cellphone. Inventions such as the telephone and telegraph and Morse code are significant to the field of communication. Students can design an invention of their own. Ideas should be practical, but students should be directed to be creative and think outside of the box.
