8th Grade Science Invention Projects

Many middle schools conduct invention conventions in which students enter their own inventions in school-wide competitions. These competitions encourage students to use their imaginations and problem-solving skills to create something new that can enhance society or make lives easier. Getting started can be challenging, but there are many ideas that eighth-grade students can use to develop their own inventions.
  1. Bicycle Hand Signal

    • Many students ride bicycles around their neighborhoods or to school. At times, these students may be riding after dark or in low light, which can be dangerous when turning across streets. Design a device that lets motor vehicles know that the cyclist is turning in the dark. Examples are gloves with battery-powered lights, flashlights on the handlebars or a jacket with a strand of holiday lights covering the arms. Consider safety when working with electricity, particularly when wearing or using the lights in adverse weather conditions such as rain or snow.

    Organization Tools

    • Consider developing tools that will aid in organization of school supplies, personal items or work-related tools. An example is a backpack with special pockets for items students typically carry to school such as pencils, pens, water bottles, lunch and books. Make the pockets customizable using Velcro, which allows students to move pockets where they need them. Create an apron for individuals who use walkers. The apron could hang on the walker and include pockets for personal items such as cell phones, wallets and car keys. Design a teacher's tool-belt. Create loops and pockets on an apron that could hold dry-erase markers and erasers, remote controls, sticky notes and pencils.

    Pet Helpers

    • Think of inventions that would make caring for pets easier. Design a leash that allows you to walk more than one dog at one time by fastening two or more hooks to one leash. Use fabric, rubber balls, rope or other items to invent a toy for dogs or cats to play with. Invent an automatic pet-food dispenser or water-dish filler. Design stairs or a ramp that allows small or older cats and dogs to get into the car or on a couch or bed. Create pet collars that are reflective or light up at night.

    Games and Sports

    • Invent a new game or sport. Use index cards to create a new card game. Paint patterns or pictures on a sheet of cardboard and create a new board game. Make tokens out of clay, beads or small figures. Invent a new sport by combining other sports and equipment or developing completely new ideas and equipment. Demonstrate the sport using figures on a small version of the field or court or by showing a video of students playing the sport. Students gifted in technology may create a video game or new gaming system.
