A popular concept in political philosophies of the 17th and 18th centuries, the state of nature is not an idea often articulated today. The basic idea of the concept was to develop an understanding of mankind's condition before government. David Hume, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke all used various forms of the state of nature to argue for a specific formulation of the state. Evaluate whether the state of nature has any relevance to current political theory. Do some political theorists use similar theoretical constructs? Why did it fall out of favor?
Add a bit of sociological observation into your political thesis by checking out student governments. How effectively do schools with student governments mirror more advanced political systems? Are there lessons to be learned from student government? How do smaller-scale powers translate into smaller-scale processes? This thesis could involve a number of evaluative questions sent to many different schools or keen observations of one school government system.
What happens when a society once governed becomes an ungoverned society? Many nations have had governments completely fail, throwing the system into confusion. Examples from the modern day could include Somalia, while numerous historical examples, such as the fall of the Roman Empire, could be found. What goes on functioning? What assumptions do people continue to hold? How much does private industry fill the void?
