Thesis Ideas on Nonverbal Language

Nonverbal language is used throughout society by both genders, in every social environment and even in professional presentations. Some nonverbal communications are involuntary and out of the control of the speaker, while others are practiced techniques that inspire trust and help an audience follow a speaker's complex ideas throughout their speech.
  1. Gender Differences

    • The different nonverbal communication techniques used by men and women help identify the differences between the genders and identify the different ways that individuals feel about their own gender. Study these differences and consider available literature on gender differences, focusing on what these techniques say about the perception of the individual using them. For instance, determine if men or women are more forceful in their gestures and compare this information to academic sources for help in understanding their significances.

    Social Environment

    • Individuals use different nonverbal language skills when they are in a social setting, in a closed social setting such as when they are with their close family and when they are in an open social setting such as work. Study these different nonverbal language techniques and consider the possible reasons for the change. Attempt to focus on the expressive techniques that are beyond the individual's personal control, such as their facial expressions, tension in their bodies and whether their stance is angled more aggressively or passively. These differences should help you understand something about their perception of the relative environment.

    Control

    • Nonverbal language can be divided between gestures that are completely involuntary, voluntary and able to be controlled through practice. Study the differences between each of these and note specific gestures that fall into each category. Use research to support your conclusions and explain the amount of practice necessary to control various gestures. Your study will determine which specific kinds of gestures are more trustworthy, in that they are involuntary and impossible to hide or falsify.

    Nonverbal In Speech

    • The nonverbal components of a speech allows the speaker to enhance his message, clarify his direction and build his authority with the audience. Examine a publicized speech, such as a Presidential speech. The more experience your speaker has with public speaking, the better. Watch the speech initially without sound and pay close attention to their gestures and what those gestures represent. Some may invite you to trust their speech, while others try to hold your attention. Study the gestures in their face, hands and overall body language.
