List of Majors at Old Dominion University

Once a branch of the College of William and Mary, Old Dominion University, a public research institution in Norfolk, Virginia, gained university status in 1969. It encompasses six colleges, which offer approximately 70 undergraduate majors, 60 Master's degrees and 36 doctoral degrees. Several joint and interdisciplinary programs are also offered.
  1. College of Arts and Letters

    • Arts and Letters undergraduates can major in art (history, studio or education), music, dance, theater, history, political science, sociology, African-American, African and Asian studies, communications, criminal justice, English, geography, philosophy, religious studies and women's studies. Pre-designed and custom interdisciplinary majors are allowed.

      Also offered are Masters of Arts (M.A.s) in humanities, international studies, applied linguistics, applied sociology, English, history, visual studies and music education and a Masters of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in creative writing. Doctoral students can major in English, international studies and criminology.

    College of Business and Public Administration

    • The College of Business and Public Administration awards a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in economics and Bachelors of Science (B.S.s) in Business Administration in seven majors: accounting, decision sciences, economics, finance, international business management, management information systems and marketing.

      At the graduate level, options include a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.), M.A. in economics and M.S.s in accounting and computer science. The latter is offered in conjunction with the College of Sciences. Two Ph.D.s are offered, in Business Administration and Public Administration and Urban Policy.

    Darden College of Education

    • For undergraduates, the Darden College of Education offers the following majors: recreation and tourism studies, physical education with concentrations in exercise science, health and teacher preparation, speech-language pathology and audiology and human services. Other undergraduate options include professional studies programs for fashion, industrial technology and training specialist and teacher license programs in marketing education and technology education.

      Masters of Education concentrations include speech-language pathology, counseling, early childhood, higher, secondary, special and physical education, educational leadership, instructional design, athletic training, exercise science, recreation and tourism studies, sports management, reading and some field-based programs.

      Available Ph.D.s include counseling, community college leadership, curriculum and instruction, early childhood, higher and special education, educational leadership, instructional design and technology, literacy leadership and human movement science.

    College of Health Sciences

    • The College of Health Sciences offers B.S.s in cytotechnology, environmental health, dental hygiene, health sciences, medical technology, nuclear medicine technology, nursing and ophthalmic technology. M.S. offerings include community health, dental hygiene, environmental health, several nursing programs and public health. Ph.D. programs include Health Sciences and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DPN) and Physical Therapy (DPT).

    Frank Batten College of Engineering & Technology

    • The Frank Batten College of Engineering & Technology offers B.S.s in computer, environmental, electrical, civil and mechanical engineering. All of the aforementioned are available for M.S.s, Masters of Engineering and doctoral students. Masters degrees in aerospace engineering and systems engineering are also offered.

    College of Sciences

    • The College of Sciences awards B.S.s in psychology, computer science, chemistry, biochemistry, biology (with concentrations in marine biology and pre-health), ocean and earth science, physics and mathematics and statistics. Several programs lead to optional eligibility for secondary teacher certification.

      Master and doctoral degrees are offered in computational and applied mathematics, chemistry, computer science, psychology and physics. Other M.S. majors include biology and ocean and earth science. Ph.D.s are awarded in ecological science, oceanography and biomedical sciences.
