When did teachers become unionized?

The earliest American teacher union was founded in 1902 in Chicago. By 1919, 20 states and the District of Columbia had state teachers' associations that were affiliates of the National Education Association (NEA). In 1920, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) was formed as the teaching arm of the American Federation of Labor.
