The American Woodworking Academy offers a master woodworking program which includes three modules consisting of fundamental, intermediate and advanced courses as well as laboratory time. For those looking for individual courses, the academy offers such courses as basic furniture making, exterior closure and design, children's play furniture and advanced fundamentals. Instructors have training in several areas, including engineering, carpentry and specialized woodworking and are also local practitioners.
The Appalachian Center for Crafts offers a wood turning program aimed at giving a strong foundation in woodworking and furniture making. The programs consists of eight classes that concentrate on different aspects of wood turning and design. Each semester concentrates on one of the primary furniture forms, cabinets, tables and chairs. Students also study and practice the major technical areas, joinery, bending, shaping and finishing. The program also includes visits by local artists, a workshop program and studio visits.
The John C. Campbell Folk School offers a hands-on, supportive, non-competitive approach to wood turning instruction. Beginners have opportunities to learn fundamental skills in classes ranging from faceplate work to edged bowls to stone inlays and surface embellishments. For the more experienced wood turner wanting to learn a new technique, week-long and weekend classes are available and include turning in the polychromatic style, furniture making and metal spinning in combination with wood turning.
The Marc Adams School offers a bevy of wood turning courses such as turning functional objects for the kitchen, ornamental carving, furniture finishing and turning green wood. Courses are a day to a week long, with students in week-long courses eligible for a wood turning fellowship. This fellowship program demands students take specific turning classes that develop technique and design skills as well as establishing professional standards of care for students to use in assessing their own work.
