How to Get Into an Accredited LPN Program

An LPN program is a college level training course designed to help students become licensed practical nurses. Most LPN programs take nine to 18 months to finish. Completing an accredited LPN program prepares you to enter the medical field. To gain access to the growing profession of nursing, you must follow certain important steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare yourself before you apply. Take high school classes in biology, math and chemistry. Volunteer your time at a local hospital or nursing home.

    • 2

Research carefully. LPN programs can be found in every state. Most LPN programs fall into one of three categories: community college programs, freestanding academic LPN programs, and training programs affiliated with hospitals. Each category of program has different criteria for admittance. Typically, community colleges have tougher requirements and even waiting lists for admittance but charge lower fees. Private programs cost more but often have a greater number of seats. The National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission should license any program that you choose.

    • 3

Apply to multiple programs. Applying to more than one program will increase your odds of acceptance somewhere. Narrow down your choices to five or six schools that you like best. The LPN schools should meet several criteria, including affordability, access to well-qualified staff members, and high job placement rates.

    • 4

Get copies of application forms. All LPN programs should be able to send you all necessary forms for admission before you apply. Most programs will send out a packet of information that includes forms to list your educational background, previous experience and standardized test scores. Read over the forms. Make sure you have all the materials they want.

    • 5

Gather all necessary documents. You may need copies of your high school transcripts, financial background forms to apply for student loans, and copies of recommendations from advisors and teachers. LPN program officials should be able to provide with a list of documents that you'll need.

Contact the admissions office. Make sure that you have everything they want from you. Once you submitted the documentation, contact the office to verify that it received your application.
