Top Construction Schools

Construction workers who seek management positions with big firms or hope to own their own company can improve their prospects by going to school. Many schools offer two- and four-year undergraduate programs in construction management, which can lead to coveted positions in areas such as general contracting and superintending. (Reference 1) Most of the elite construction schools are four-year programs that award bachelor of science degrees, but there are many two-year programs and online schools as well. One way to identify a worthwhile program is to search for those that the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) has accredited. (Reference 2)

    • UNLV's Construction Management Program, part of the school's College of Engineering, aims to teach skills that will help graduates plan, engineer and construct residential and commercial buildings plus infrastructure projects such as bridges, highways and power plants.     2. Virginia Tech

    • Virginia Tech's construction engineering and management program emphasizes courses in civil engineering and building construction, and also includes courses from the university's business college. The goal is to teach the ability to lead large projects that take into account safety, efficiency, cost effectiveness, environmental issues and social concerns. (Reference 4)

    3. Michigan State

    • Michigan State's School of Planning, Design and Construction traces its roots back to 1898, when it began offering courses toward a major in landscape architecture. The Construction Management Program began in 1948 and offers classes in management, finance, contracts, building codes, business law and more. The school works computer applications into many courses and touts its internship program as well. (Reference 5)

    • North Dakota State's Department of Construction Management and Engineering is part of the school's College of Engineering and Architecture.     • The undergraduate program requires 125 hours to earn a degree, and the school says graduates typically find work in project management or similar areas. The school's location in South Florida places it in one of the country's busiest regions for construction, according to the university's web site, thus increasing employment and internship opportunities.
