The roots of Baker College go back to 1911. In 2008, the college built the 40,000-square-foot Culinary Institute of Michigan. The institute, accredited by the American Culinary Federation, provides an environment in which students can master the skills of food service. It has a full-service restaurant, a pastry and coffee shop, and a world-class culinary arts program. The institute offers a certificate and an associate's degree in baking and pastry-making, an associate's degree in culinary arts, associate's and bachelor's degrees in food and beverage management, and cooking classes for the public.

The Art Institute of Michigan offers "real-world education" in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, and culinary/restaurant management. Students can work toward an associate of applied science degree in culinary arts, a bachelor of applied science degree in culinary management, or a certificate in professional baking and pastry making. Cooking students learn culinary techniques and skills, culinary concepts and theory, baking science and theory, and food and beverage operations management. Northern Michigan University's hospitality management and food service management programs prepare students to be food service and restaurant industry professionals. The university offers an associate's degree in food service management and a bachelor's degree in hospitality management. Hospitality management students learn food service skills in the school's cafe. They also write recipes, develop menus, create production schedules and analyze menu financials at Chez Nous, the school's restaurant/bistro. Coursework includes food selection and preparation, professional cooking and baking, banquets and catering, hospitality services management and many Disney hospitality courses.
