Truckee Meadows Community College, in Reno, offers a two-year associate of applied science degree with an emphasis on automotive technology. The program is offered at the school's IGT Applied Technologies Center. The center also offers one-year certificates of achievement for general auto maintenance workers, as well as ASE certification. All of the schools automotive programs are designed to prepare students for high-wage jobs at car dealerships. The IGT Technologies Center is a 10,000-square-foot facility that offers flexible scheduling, networked computer labs, smart classrooms and distance education training.
Universal Technical Institute, which has 10 campuses across the country, offers a 51-week core automotive program at its Sacramento, California campus, 130 miles from Reno. The core program prepares students to troubleshoot, service and repair domestic and foreign vehicles. Classes start every six weeks and cover the fundamentals of how engines work, as well as the advanced technology of modern vehicles. In addition to the core program, the center offers additional nine- to 15-week programs specific to Ford, Nissan and Toyota vehicles. The center also offers a 15-week post-graduate International Technician Education Program.
American River College, also located in Sacramento, California, offers associate degrees in automotive analysis, automotive technology, automotive collision technology and automotive component service. The school also offers 13 different automotive certificates, including ASE and NATEF certification, automotive analysis, and automotive technology. Courses are held at the Mather Transportation Center, and can be taken in five-, eight- or 16-week formats. The hands-on programs offer flexible scheduling, small class sizes, financial aid and job placement support. The school has partnerships with various car dealerships, body shops, and other companies in the region that regularly hire program graduates.
Yuba College, in Marysville, California, 120 miles from Reno, offers associate degrees in several automotive fields, including master mechanic, drive trains, chassis, and body and paint. The school also offers certificates in these areas, as well as in automatic transmissions, brakes, electrical systems and engine performance. The automotive program at Yuba College seeks to prepare students to fill entry-level jobs in the industry, and to provide those already employed in the industry with additional training. Courses are designed to prepare students to pass ASE testing.
