Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California, offers several options to those interested in obtaining the certification required to work as a veterinary technician. Students can complete the traditional route of study, which takes two years and consists of prescribed course work; or individuals already working in the veterinary field can complete the alternate route, which allows students to substitute on-the-job training for class work. Individuals who complete either route of study qualify to take the California RVT State Board Examination, a test required by the State of California to be certified as a veterinary technician. The programs at Pierce College are certified by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

All of the programs in the Animal Science department at Cal Poly are endorsed by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Students at Cal Poly receive the standard animal care training that they can expect from other veterinary technician schools but they get the added benefit of experiencing a large animal care program by studying equine health at the Kellogg Arabian Horse Center. Students at Cal Poly can work towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science or Animal Health Science, both of which qualify students to take the required exam to secure a job as a veterinary technician.
