Phlebotomy Technician Schools

Phlebotomists are medical technicians responsible for drawing blood from a patient's vein (venipuncture) for diagnostic testing or for blood banking. There are a wide variety of training programs in phlebotomy, available from community colleges, vocational schools or clinics, and range in length of program and depth of training. As most employers prefer phlebotomists possess certification, it's important to choose a program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

    Austin Community College

    • In Austin, Texas, the Austin Community College's phlebotomy training program includes both classroom coursework and a 100+ hour clinical internship. These internships take place with local "clinical affiliates," which include hospitals, labs and blood banks, and students attend 4 to 8 hour rotations during their enrollment.

    University of Hawaii Kapiolani Community College

    • At the University of Hawaii's Kapiolani Community College campus, the phlebotomy training program consists of two parts: a 64 hour classroom component and a 100 hour clinical internship. There is some flexibility in scheduling clinical internship hours, as the college allows students to work part time (4 hour) shifts for 5 week or full time (8 hour shifts) for 2 1/2 weeks.
