Delta College's certificate program for health unit coordinator is a combination classroom and clinical academic experience. Students will begin with 80 hours of classroom training on skills that are necessary to work in a hospital or medical office setting as a health unit coordinator. Following this, students must complete 160 hours of clinical training in a hospital under the supervision of a health unit preceptor. The health unit preceptor is the clinical (hospital setting) teacher with whom the student trains. All students must demonstrate the completion of acceptable prerequisites in reading, math, and writing prior to admission. Students who already hold an associate's degree or higher will not need to additional prerequisites. Additional requirements for starting this program include a physical examination by a licensed doctor, negative TB test, Hepatitis B vaccination, documented MMR vaccination (mumps, measles, rubella), and a current criminal history clearance.

The health unit coordinator program at Macomb Community College leads to a continuing education certificate. prospective students must have a high school diploma and basic computer skills. Students without any computer skills may take a prerequisite computer course such as Introduction to Computers. Additionally, students must have a physical examination, negative TB test, and criminal background check prior to starting school. The health unit coordinator certificate program lasts for five months and consists of 64 hours of class time and 80 hours of clinical internship. internships take place at St. John and Henry Ford Macomb. Students must participate in the internship to earn the certificate.
