The Georgia School of Construction in Conyers offers two levels of heavy equipment training. Atlanta Technical College has a 90-credit program for a Diesel Equipment Technology Program to prepare students for the repair and service of heavy equipment.
Instruction is provided at the Georgia School on the operation of equipment such as a backhoe, advanced backhoe, wheel loader, bulldozer and hydraulic excavator (also called a trackhoe). Students at Atlanta Technical are trained in preventive maintenance, electrical systems, hydraulics, brakes, steering, suspension and fuel systems.
Learning to operate heavy equipment provides opportunities for employment in a variety of industries such as construction, utilities, plumbing, excavation, landscaping and mining. Successful completion of the Diesel Equipment Technology program qualifies graduates as diesel equipment technicians.
