Top Technical Universities in Europe

According to US News in 2009, the world's top ten engineering and technology universities were found in the US, Europe, Canada, and Japan. Half of these were in the US, closely followed by Europe, which had three (two in the UK and one in Switzerland).
  1. Cambridge University

    • Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is one of the world's oldest universities. Located in the town of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, it is made up of 31 separate colleges and more than 150 different departments and faculties. Its School of Technology is home to 2,455 students and 208 faculty members who work throughout the school's four departments: engineering, chemical engineering and biotechnology, computer laboratory, and Judge Business School. According to US News, Cambridge was the world's fourth best university for technology in 2009, and the best in Europe. Each year it awards 1,140 degrees, of which 520 are master's and 480 are bachelor's.

    Imperial College London

    • According to US News, in 2009 Imperial College London was the world's sixth best technical university and the second best in Europe. Founded in 1907, it is home to more than 13,000 full-time students from 158 countries. Imperial is made up of four faculties including engineering, medicine, business and natural sciences. Students can also choose to take a number of humanities courses in conjunction with their science or technology-based courses. Prospective students can choose from a range of 238 courses at bachelor's, master's, and doctorate levels.

    ETH Zurich

    • ETH Zurich was founded in 1855; in 2009 it had more than 16,000 students from more than 80 countries. Based in the city of Zurich in Switzerland, the university is home to around 400 faculty members in its schools of engineering, architecture, mathematics, system sciences, management and social sciences and natural sciences. Students can choose from 23 bachelor's and 39 master's programs within the university's departments. The university also has 3,400 doctoral students across 16 departments. According to US News, in 2009 ETH Zurich was the tenth best in the world for technology and the third best in Europe.
