The Educational Testing Service fee can be paid directly to Sylvan Learning Center. No advance registration is necessary.

    Preparation

    • Preparation for the Praxis I includes obtaining the school and agency numbers for your mentoring institution and your state department of education. Unless you specify a department of education, Educational Testing Service will mail your scores to the state department of education where you took your test. Educational Testing Service offers test preparation material online for each of the Praxis examinations. You must have two forms of identification to be admitted into the Praxis examination. Praxis tests are proficiency tests. The Praxis I is your first step toward certification as a full-time K through 12 teacher.

    Praxis I

    • The four-section test is 4-1/2 hours long. The reading test is 75 minutes long and asks 46 multiple choice questions. The mathematics test is also 46 questions and 75 minutes long. A writing section of the Praxis I consists of 38 minutes to answer 44 multiple choice questions. The final section of the Praxis I is an essay you must complete in 30 minutes. The essay question is a simple writing prompt. Your essay must demonstrate well-organized thoughts and superior writing skills. Your score on the multiple choice portion of the test is displayed on the computer screen before you leave the Sylvan Learning Center. You know whether you passed or failed on the same day you take the examination.

    Score Report

    • The state departments of education set the passing scores for the Educational Testing Service, which processes the tests and compares the scores to the pass fail criteria for each state. Score reports are available 10 business days after the test date. Educational Testing Service sends the scores to the colleges and department of education designated by the test taker and sends one copy of the score report to the test taker.
