How to Convert Your GPA Into a Percent Value

Grade Point Average (GPA) is a method of scoring students' performance based on a grading system that ranges from 1.0 to 4.0 and in some cases from 0.0 to 4.0. In GPA system, students with 4.0 GPA receive an A+ grade. Institutions have a different conversion formula for converting GPA to percentage value. In some cases, 4.0 GPA ranges from 95th to 100th percentile. In other universities, 4.0 GPA lies between 90th and 100th percentiles. You must determine the exact equivalence criteria of a particular institution to convert your scores from GPA to a percent value. Keep in mind that you cannot convert from GPA to a specific percent score; rather, you will only be able to figure out a range of percent scores in which your GPA lies.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the GPA to percentile equivalence criteria established by your institution.

    • 2

Open the GPA Conversion Chart given at McMaster University's website. This conversion chart lists the different equivalence criteria for converting from GPA to percentage for different institutions in separate columns. Look up your institution's equivalence criteria under the "Percentage" tab of the chart.

    • 3

Figure out the range of percentile values in which your GPA lies. Assuming that your institution's equivalence criteria is listed in column 4 of the table, look up your GPA score in the leftmost column and see the corresponding percentile range in column 4 of the table. If your university's equivalence criteria were to fall in column 3 of the table, then you would look up the GPA score given in the leftmost column against the corresponding percentile range given in column 3 of the table.
