Acupuncture schools are considered graduate programs, so it is expected that most incoming students will have completed at least their undergraduate study at an accredited college or university, and received their bachelor's degree. There no required major of study, although it is recommended, and sometimes required, that a student take preparatory coursework in science. A student should also have at least a 2.5 GPA to be considered.
Many acupuncture programs will consider and accept students who have not completed a bachelor's degree program. However, you must have completed anywhere from 60 to 90 credits at an accredited college or university before you will be admitted. The coursework must consist of general education requirements such as English, math, science and humanities. Some schools, such as the Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley, require that students complete courses specifically in biology, chemistry, physics and psychology.
While there are usually no specific coursework requirements for incoming students, there are recommended courses. Most programs recommend that students take basic courses in human biology, anthropology with a lean toward Eastern Asian culture, and even a Mandarin language course or two.
