MBA Law Degrees

A dual Master of Business Administration--law degree program may be a good option for you want to work in the area of business law or act as a legal consultant for a major company. These accelerated programs award both the MBA and a Juris Doctorate (JD) degree upon graduation. While they are tough to get through, opportunities abound for those who finish. JD/MBA programs are generally full-time commitments and can be completed in as little as three years.
  1. Georgetown University Law Center

    • This is a four-year program that consists of 124 credit hours (as of May 2010). During the first year, students study law; in the second year, the coursework focuses more on business. The third year comprises JD work again, and in the final year the courses are integrated. Georgetown University Law Center boasts a five-story law library and is located in Washington D.C., close to Capitol Hill.

    Santa Clara Law

    • Located in California, Santa Clara Law offers a combined JD/MBA program that offers some flexibility if you've already taken some of the coursework. Each student meets with an adviser and comes up with an individualized course plan. This is a full-time program but if you've already taken undergraduate business coursework, some of the MBA coursework may be waived. Santa Clara only admits about 10% of applicants; these students have demonstrated leadership skills and a strong academic record. As with most other JD/MBA programs, students must submit applications through both the law school and business school.

    Northwestern Law

    • This university initiated the United States' first three-year accelerated JD/MBA program in 1999. There is a track of courses set for the students and they go through the program together, as a cohort. The first year is spent at the law school and the second is spent at the business college, Kellogg School of Management. Students do an internship over the summer and then return to study law during the third year. Again, only about 10% of applicants get in but this school is unique in that the application process is fully integrated so students only submit one application instead of two.

All coursework is complete in three years of full-time study. There is a part-time option as well. The law college is located in Gulfport, Florida and business courses are available at any of the school's three campuses.
