The Best Way to Get an Associate's Degree

An associate degree (AA) is awarded to students who have completed 60 semester hours of core educational requirements through a college or technical school. To receive a traditional AA degree, you will be required to complete general education classes, courses required for your major and electives. Each school will have specific courses you must take in each of these categories to earn your AA, so it's important you research your school before enrollment.

Instructions

    • 1

Research a few schools you might want to attend. Each school offers different degrees, so you'll want to find one that offers the AA in your field of interest. Most degree plans and descriptions can be found online through the college website.

    • 2

Apply to the college or technical school you want to attend. You can usually apply online, but you can also mail an application or apply in person at the college. There will be an information packet to fill out, a registration fee to pay and possibly an essay to write when you apply.

    • 3

Wait to receive a letter of acceptance through the mail. Once you receive this letter, it means you're now considered a student at the school and you can sign up for classes.

    • 4

Contact an admissions or enrollment counselor at the college and make an appointment to meet with them. Call the financial aid office and set up an appointment to determine if you qualify for tuition assistance. Before you meet with your counselors, fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. You will need your tax information from the previous year.

    • 5

Discuss the educational path you need to take for your AA with the enrollment counselor. She will be able to give you a degree path worksheet that lists courses you will need and in what order you should take them. The enrollment counselor can also give you a copy of the college catalog, which has the description of each class offered at the college. If you want to earn your AA as quickly as possible, ask about summer classes or accelerated classes.

Register for classes with the help of the enrollment counselor. Buy your textbooks, either from college or neighborhood bookstores or from Internet sites that offer new and used textbooks. Some bookstores rent textbooks for a fraction of the cost to buy them.
